Fun Senior Activities for the 4th of July
The 4th of July is one of the best times to bring the family together but not all seniors want to experience the loud noises that come with this celebration of independence. Luckily, there are still tons of things for your loved one to do during this time that will allow them to get in the American spirit and enjoy the day with family or with companion care at home. Here are some ideas your elderly parents may want to try out this year.
Decorate Their Space
Your senior mom or dad may have downsized to a smaller more manageable space to age in place, but that does not mean they don’t want to decorate for the season. Companion care at home can help them go shopping for new decor, take out storage items, and put things up around the house. If companion care at home helps with this task it will ensure that no decor is accidentally a tripping hazard and it will help your senior get into the spirit. They can choose items that are red, white, and blue like our American flag.
Bake 4th of July Cupcakes
One of the easiest things a senior can do is bake something yummy for kids and grandkids. They may have secret recipes they have never shared or they may want to try something new. This is the time to create something funky and teach the kids something new. If your senior loved one needs help getting groceries to do this activity, it is something else that companion care at home can help with.
Put Together a Charcuterie Board
If you are hosting a party, task your elderly mom or dad to create a charcuterie board. This is one of the easiest ways to create snacks that are red, white, and blue, they go with the theme! Your senior loved one may be able to get really creative and surprise you and the whole family.
Attend a 4th of July Parade
Most communities love to get together to celebrate this day. One of the activities that can be fun for seniors is going out to a parade. There are usually places to sit in the shade and bathrooms nearby too. This makes it perfect for elderly people to enjoy. Companion care at home can tag along with your senior loved one to ensure they are staying safe while outside the house. This is a good way to get a senior to connect with the community.
Host a Family BBQ
A senior may not want to go out to enjoy a community event but this is still a great day to host a family event. Invite your senior to make a side dish and join your household for a family bbq. This is a good way to spend the day and know your senior will be comfortable and safe. You can play games, enjoy good food, and do small fireworks that make no sound.
Watch Fireworks on TV
Sometimes relaxing at home is just what a senior needs to enjoy the day. This can be a special event where a senior watches fireworks on TV with companion care at home. It is a small and easy way to celebrate the 4th of July.
