Even a short hospital stay can take a lot out of your elderly family member. By the time she’s ready to come home, she might need some extra help ensuring that she’s able to be there safely. You can do a lot to make sure that your senior’s return home is a happy one that lasts as long as possible.
Determine if She Needs Any Medical Equipment
Depending on what your senior was in the hospital for, she may still need some medical equipment when she comes home. That medical equipment might vary from things like oxygen equipment to a walker. Whatever it is, you might want to talk to her doctor before your elderly family member is discharged so that you have time to gather anything she might need.
Consider Senior Care Providers
Senior care providers can make life so much easier for your elderly family member when she returns home. She may need assistance with some of the medical equipment that she’ll be using. It’s also highly likely that your elderly family member could benefit from having some extra assistance around her home the first few days that she’s there. She may need help bathing or taking care of other personal care tasks and home care makes that extremely easy.
Make Sure She’s Got Meals and Food
It’s difficult to feel up for cooking when you’ve been in the hospital. It might be a good idea for you to make a few easy meals for your senior that she or senior care providers can just heat up. If you’re not there with your elderly family member on a regular basis, make sure that you check in with her regularly. Make sure that you and she are aware of any of the signs her doctor wanted her to watch for so that she reduces the risk of heading back into the hospital. If you are able to spend some time with her in person, that can be really helpful in her recovery, too.
